When a restaurant is both the band and the groupie

Punavuori is a true heaven for foodies. New restaurants are opening their doors at lightning speed, old ones are sticking around––the hype is real. One of the most talked-about is a laid back bistro with a strong emphasis on French and Italian classics; a restaurant that is open only four days a week, but until 2 AM, which is very much appreciated among restaurant workers who don’t end their shifts until late.

Baskeri & Basso, or just Basbas as the locals call it, is a place where regulars enjoy their daily fix of cacio e pepe, preferably with a glass of cherry-juicy Gamay-Pinot Noir from Christian Venier. Creamy burrata is always on the menu, as is a weekly-special steak tartare.

Stop for a moment and take in the cheerful ambiance, you might just feel like a rock concert was about to begin, not knowing whether you are in the band or with the band. The bar staff is usually jamming to the tunes of a vast playlist featuring everything from 1960’s French pop to current radio hits.

Order a couple more dishes from the menu written on the wall. White asparagus with horseradish and roasted hazelnuts is a delicate ode to spring. Don’t miss the roasted sprouting cauliflower with Stilton and caramelized walnuts.

Exuberant is the one word that best describes Basbas. As you’re finishing up and putting on your coat, we guarantee that you’ll already be planning your next Basbas-gig.
