Art, food and wines galore
Already in its name, Ateljé Finne reveals a nugget of Finnish art history, previously the space was sculptor Gunnar Finne’s (1886–1952) atelier/studio. Described as a very prolific and energetic character, it’s no surprise that Finne’s works of art can be seen all over Helsinki. Writer and poet Zacharias Topelius’ monument at Esplanadi Park is perhaps the most famous of his pieces.
“Finne”, as the regulars call it, has not lost its arty, atelier-essence. The bright and airy setting whets the appetite for what’s to come; meat and fish are strictly of domestic origin, the bread is baked with organic flour from Malmgård mill and brewery, everything on the almost monthly-changing menu has a documented pedigree.
The food is rustic yet fresh, with an emphasis on local eats in the form of crowd-pleasing classics like beef tartare and tenderloin steak with lobster butter. Likewise, fish has always played a major role here. Pair your golden, crispy pike croquette with a local beer or a glass of spunky natural wine.
Whatever your preference, your tipple will surely get along well with the homey, yet crisp flavors of Finne’s dishes.
And to all of you with a sweet tooth, do not leave without trying the signature licorice crème brûlée, it’s a great way to get acquainted with Finland’s most beloved candy.
While in this part of town, take the opportunity to stroll around the old, picturesque Töölö-district, visit a museum or two and end your day in a history-filled setting.
