Elite

Elite has been a living room for the city’s artists since it first opened in 1932, it has also changed hands several times, but thankfully the décor hasn’t been updated, it’s still as classy as it was back in the day. Don’t be discouraged by the semi-snooty name, Elite has always attracted an ecclectic mix of guests; old regulars, as well as curious newbies. Also there to make you feel welcome: the charming doorman that takes your coat.

The whole dining experience juggles old and new in a most elegant way: as you savor the dramatic tableside show of flambéd limousin-ox, your vegetarian dinner companion may enjoy snappy fava beans with salsa verde. Steak and onions with cream sauce, an Elite signature dish, is one of many devoted to the Finnish cultural scene’s original elite, it’s said to have been a favorite of the charismatic actor Tauno Palo (1908-1980). Elite is one of the few remaining restaurants where you can enjoy the same static, nostalgic ambience featured in Aki Kaurismäki’s iconic movies.
