Pebbles, romance and a pig named Pelle

Stroll along the narrow, cobbled streets of Porvoo’s picturesque Old Town and you’ll feel teleported back in time. Across from the glorious 13th century Porvoo Cathedral, SicaPelle Wining & Dining is neatly tucked a half-flight down from the time warp above. The name means ‘pig clown’ in Finnish, it’s a wink to the building’s previous owner, sculptor Ville Vallgren, who had a pet pig named Pelle.

With only five tables and communal bar seating, the dimly lit bistro breathes jazzy romance; a charming place for a laidback lunch or a lavish dinner. The extended wine list features both natural and conventional alternatives. The menu boasts grilled herring and pike rillettes with fennel fronds, alfalfa sprouts and small apple pearls in fresh thyme oil, it’s a fresh spring starter that gives nod to the neighboring archipelago. The sweetened rye bread served with whipped black truffle butter ought to be a dish in and of itself.

Finnish-Sicilian Executive Chef Simona Milazzo can often be seen bringing out choice dishes herself, taking the time to chat with her guests. Her favorite part of the Iberico porc, la pluma is served with a potato puree seasoned with mustard and a refreshing raw cabbage salad with spring onion and slivers of red chili.
