Exclusive digs in posh surrounds
In a hallowed part of Stockholm, midway between the Royal Opera and the shopping glamour of Nordiska Kompaniet, a peaceful cobblestone oasis lives on in the very centre of the city. Västra Trädgårdsgatan narrowly escaped the construction boom that raged from the 1950s on. Before the hotel opened here in 2015, the imposing 18th-century building had served as both noble residence and bank. The renovation preserved the building’s cultural heritage value, and the result is beautiful and timeless, the atmosphere rarefied. The 94 individually decorated rooms are in the Gustavian style, and with a high level of comfort. The attic rooms have dormer windows and views over Stockholm’s roofs, while others overlook the urban park life in Kungsträdgården. There are several levels with seating, and the space is partly intended to serve as a lounge, but for better or worse it is dominated by the hotel’s French bistro. Every morning a sturdy breakfast buffet is laid out in the mirror-clad room on the same level. Vibrant smoothies provide a good start to the day.
