Modernist fin-de-siècle with an unbeatable location by the water
Strand is a hotel with history: it was inaugurated in connection with the Stockholm summer Olympics of 1912, making it Stockholm’s oldest. Greta Garbo was a regular when she was in town, and in the 1960s the local jet set partied at Alexandra’s nightclub here. Despite having been comprehensively renovated recently, the hotel retains elements of the fin-de-siècle aesthetic, tastefully blended with classic Danish design. Rooms are elegantly and expensively furnished with quality materials (thick, fluffy towels and luscious sheets) and there are many clever modern details such as built-in USB points for chargers and Nespresso machines. The location – downtown and yet with an archipelago vibe, right by Nybroviken – is pretty much unbeatable, and the view from the breakfast room couldn’t be more perfectly Stockholm. The breakfast itself is size-able but surprisingly standard. The hotel restaurant, The Strand, which uses the space at all other times, serves brasserie classics alongside Swedish husmanskost hits.
