The villa on the quay
The listed manager’s residence from the middle of the 19th century, turned into a hotel a decade ago, has a plum location on the quayside, with the Älvsborg bridge as backdrop, the Eriksberg crane next door, boats gliding past, and Vinga just discernible on the horizon. All around are thousands of newly built flats, mixed in with industrial buildings from the heyday of shipbuilding. To stroll along the quay to Färjenäs, where Gothenburg was founded by Charles IX, is to sense the city’s history. Or you can catch the Älvsnabben ferry across the river to the centre. Guests at Villan are received with warmth and cheer by the staff, who make you feel at home right away. Rooms have somewhat austere furnishings in dark brown and beige tones. Comfy beds, a large flat screen, spotless bathrooms, no mini-bar but with coffee always available in the lounge. Outside each room is an umbrella to borrow. Dogs are welcome, with a complimentary bone and bowl of wate in each designated dog room. The pleasant restaurant on the second floor has a view over the river and the city, and is always ready. The breakfast buffet is here, but you can also get a nice bite to eat and a glass of wine at any time..
