Hotel ahoy
Beautiful Helsingborg, which has lost some of its intensity and distinctive centre since the opening of the Öresund bridge, still boasts several historic hotels just below said centre, including Mollberg and Grand (and yes, a murdered mistress is still said to haunt the fifth floor there). The most individual character and fun atmosphere, however, can be found a few blocks away in the old seaman’s hotel now known as V in reference to its earlier names, Vega and Viking. In the seamen’s era – from 1929 – the toilets were in the hallway, and the bathrooms were perhaps not ideally planned in the renovation. Otherwise, though, then and now combine to create an amiable whole. From the lounge we hear an Englishman discussing with the receptionist whether he’s been here 20 or 21 nights, and we understand that we’re not the only ones who like it here. Helsingborg has a serious after-work scene, so the trinity of the hotel bistro, restaurant Bara Vara and the Barski pub provide all the nearby action we need.
