Romantic revelry where love has laboured
The story of Hotel Stelor is better than the pitch for a romcom: a couple about to get married chance upon an enormous old farm in Västergarn. Swept away by love, they decide to buy the whole thing in order to realise their dream, shared by many – to open a hotel. It all goes wrong, of course. The farm is sold to the next couple, who according to legend met at a wedding – her wedding. Where he was the cook. Marriage, divorce, marriage. And amid all this the old farm, like some Falcon Crest, proud and stately in its centennial glory, quite unmoved by all the drama and romance. The location is splendidly close to one of Gotland’s, and Sweden’s, best golf courses, a short drive from lively Tofta beach, and just under half an hour from Visby. The rooms, only seven, are decorated with verve and nice antiques, from the mysteriously dark (Strindberg) to the light and romantic (Mozart). The website is exemplary in its clarity, easily allowing guests to find their preference. Quality is high, from linen to sink mixer. Plus, the food at Stelor is so good that it attracts guests from far and wide. This year they have started serving a farm dinner with a fixed menu. Hotel Stelor is a given stop on your Gotland holiday if you enjoy a bit of romantic revelry in a fabulous setting. An added attraction is that the barn stage occasionally features big names in intimate gigs.
