Industry-era nostalgia in the old steam power station
Travelling groups in the active age bracket – be they conferencing or fraternising – are partial to Steam. The century-old steam power station, originally built as a back-up for the electricity supply, has been turned into a grand and modern complex bristling with energy and extra helpings of everything. Concrete, brick, iron and added crystal chandeliers sets the tone in the vast space that is reception, lobby and restaurant in one. Industrial-era nostalgia is contrasted and reinforced by sofas and armchairs in velvet, a subdued colour scheme, sculptures and small tables. Rooms are spacious. Various shades of green, with olive as the base, are much used – often with a stark contrast such as a puffy red armchair perfect for reading. Photographs recall the building’s origins. The work space is ample, and the bathroom cleanly done in black and white. But the best thing of all, if you have a window on Lake Mälaren, is the view. In summer and early autumn you see the leisure craft bobbing up and down just outside your window. Many guests come for the comprehensive offering – you won’t need to leave the building in 24 hours. The Voltage Lounge spa or the Power House Gym? Pull on your green terry robe and get down. As darkness falls you take the lift up to Locavore, a bar and restaurant with exotic Asian fare. And the view is amazing.
