Bucolic calm on the headland

On a headland in Laxsjön (‘Salmon lake’) in Dalsland lies Baldersnäs Manor, with a history going back to the 18th century. A park in the English style was laid out around the manor house during the second half of the 19th century, parts of which survive. The grand three--storey edifice, built in 1910, contains guest rooms as well as conference and dining rooms. The guest rooms are on the second floor, where an almost complete silence reigns. A bit of birdsong and a bi-cycle crunching past on the gravel path are all we hear as we wake up in the morning. Rooms are fairly sparsely equipped, but it’s nice with an open fireplace. The location on a headland gives all rooms in the main building a view of the lake. An annex and two wings, built at a later date, have additional guest rooms. The entire headland is a nature reserve, and a walk along the path by the beach provides reason-able exercise before dinner. You have to be prepared to share the path with cows and sheep, though – of which the latter are apt to take a few liberties. Öjentorps kitchen takes care of the catering, and the pleasant and helpful staff are an added bonus. During the summer months there’s a café in the courtyard, as well as little shops selling handicrafts. Baldersnäs also has all-glass cabins by the lake, part of the 72 Hour Cabin project.
