Naturum Vänerskärgården-Victoriahuset

On the shores of Lake Vänern, surrounded by trees and reeds, built of pine that has reddened, and with large windows that let in plenty of light. Naturum has exhibitions about the surrounding natural landscape and a very pleasant hotel of 15 rooms in the rustic style, with furnishings made from natural materials and sound-insulating fitted carpets. The beds are made with organic-cotton sheets, the décor features pretty sheepskin details and a blanket to wrap up in. Stately Läckö Castle glows all in white on a nearby hilltop – it offers a programme of art exhibitions and opera performances in the summer. Also close by are a golf course and walking trails, and the fishing village of Spiken. On the ground floor, the Hvita Hjorten restaurant serves top-notch food made with produce from the castle gardens and local growers. This is also where the delightful organic breakfast is served, with apple juice from Kålland, Väner salmon, wild boar sausages, crisp freshly-made waffles and much more. Do linger in one of the comfortable armchairs, enjoying the good food and the panoramic lake views. The complaisant and generally pleasant staff add to the experience.
