Floating archipelago bliss
Thank God for herring! Klädesholmen, also known as ‘Herring island’, is busy and thriving all year round thanks to the fish. This, the very tip of Tjörn, has been a fishing village since the 16th century, and the traditional archipelago houses are still here. The island is reached via a bridge, and you catch sight of the hotel right away. But what’s that thing on the water? Next to the main building of the hotel is a pontoon with black Functionalist-style houses on it. And yes, that’s where guests sleep. Dill, elderflower, and blackcurrants. Good seasonings? Absolutely, but also the names (Dill, Fläder, and Vinbär) of three of the hotel’s 23 rooms, spread over six two-story houses and connected via an enormous sun deck on the roof. All the rooms have names after ingredients used in the kitchen of Salt & Sill’s restaurant, and all have their own outside entrance plus a small patio. Some rooms on the lower floor even have their own ladder into the water! You really can’t get any closer to the sea. The view is gorgeous and in your face: sea and rounded granite cliffs. Rooms are small but functional, decorated in the modern archipelago style: white, white and white – with occasional timber and granite. A matchless breakfast is served in the main building, with a ‘vitamin C box’, local eggs and freshly baked bread. Solicitous is the word.
