Harmonious town-centre hotel with design classics

Even if Sigtuna at the end of the 10th century was not an urban metropolis even by mediaeval standards, the town is usually touted as the country’s oldest. And its hotel from 1909 is furthermore touted as Sweden’s smallest five-star design hotel. With an unobstructed view over Lake Mälaren from the restaurant (and from some of the 26 rooms), this is an especially harmonious place to spend one or more nights. Why not go for a romantic luxury weekend? Or a ‘Christmas buffet and overnight stay’? The Scandinavian interiors of oak and Öland sandstone are peppered with design classics from the 1930s–1950s. Your dressing gown and slippers are laid out for you in the room, neatly folded atop the Dux beds, and in the wardrobe you’ll find – aside from the usual iron and hair dryer – a pretty shoe shining box containing everything you need to sparkle. The bathroom calls the White Star Line’s first class cabins on the RMS Titanic to mind. No icebergs in sight, though, thank you very much.
